The Kenya Film and Classification Board Chief Executive Officer, Ezekiel Mutua, has taken to social media to reveal why he considered his graduation ceremony in October 1994 ''a sham full of pain and distress''.
Friday, December 20, 2019, saw four of Kenya's biggest universities culminate their graduation ceremonies for the year 2019. The tertiary institutions include; Daystar University, Technical University of Kenya (TUK), Kenyatta University (KU) and the University of Nairobi (UoN).
Ezekiel narrated to his Facebook followers why his graduation was not what he expected.
In the post, he detailed the sequence of events which happened two days before and on the fateful graduation day.
"I was robbed at OTC in town two days before the graduation day. I had just picked my pay from Nation Centre, where I worked as a journalist and was heading to the bus station to KU to pick my graduation gown, only for some robbers to pounce on me and disappear with everything - money, clothes and my identification documents," he recalled.
The loss of his identification documents derailed the mission to collect his graduation gown.
The KFCB CEO, further narrated that he was only able to secure his graduation gown on the morning of his big day, which made him arrive at the Graduation Square, accompanied by family members and friends, a little too late.
He felt devastated and humiliated for having to follow the proceedings while hanging on the fence, with his mother, brothers, sisters and friends who had come to witness and support, having to listen in from outside.
Ezekiel had never imagined that 25 years later, he would return to the same venue as a distinguished VIP alumnus guest at the Kenyatta University 47th Graduation Ceremony.
While following the proceeding on Friday, he recollected how he had suffered the humiliation.
"As I sat at the front row of the KU Graduation Square, my name being mentioned in every speech, I gazed at the corner where I stood in the fateful morning of October 1994 and shed a tear, not of pain, but profound gratitude," he told his followers.
''God has raised me and healed my pain. May anyone going through their graduation today feeling low and dejected know that God can turn their situation around and honour them at the very place where they experienced the worst pain," he advised.
