Police Choppers Spoil Christmas for Thika Superhighway Motorists [VIDEO]

A National Trasport and Safety Authority (NTSA) crackdown on Monday, December 23, caused a traffic snarl-up along Thika Superhighway.

So severe was the situation, according to photos posted by various users, that some of the road users alighted from their vehicles to wait it out.

In a report by Citizen Digital, 58 vehicles were impounded for flouting various traffic rules in line with a warning issued by the authority ahead of the Christmas festivities.

The National Police Service deployed choppers to aid in the crackdown along the expansive highway.

Most of the vehicles were found to be unroadworthy.

In a statement, NPS disclosed that they would use the choppers to monitor traffic across the whole country this festive season and that other officers would be deployed on the ground.

"Standing on guard this festive season is our National Police Service Airwing: it will be patrolling the country giving air support to our officers on the ground.

"The unit will help in monitoring the traffic situation along our major highways for prompt intervention where needed," read the statement in part.

On Thursday, December 19, Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai issued a stern warning to passengers who will be travelling to various parts of the country during the festive season.

Mutyambai cautioned passengers against traveling in excess in both public and private means of transport.

"I would like to warn passengers against being in excess both in private or PSV vehicles effective today. We will deal with the excess passengers in our roadblocks.

"It does not matter from which point, the vehicle will continue with its destination as the passenger remains behind," he warned at the time.

Mutyambai further directed the police to take action with immediate effect, citing that no passenger should blame the conductor or driver for not having an assigned seat.
