Section of Doctors Wins Big in New Year Deal

Doctors in Kisumu have had their demands fulfilled following a strike that lasted almost a month.

On December 6, the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Kisumu branch called for a doctors strike after the county government failed to honour their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

On Saturday, December 28, the medical professionals had a reason to smile after their demands were met. In a statement calling off the strike, the leaders announced that an agreement had been arrived at.

The notice was signed jointly by Chief Officer, Administration and partnerships, department of Health and Sanitation in Kisumu County,  Alphonse Ouya and KMPDU, Nyanza Branch Chairperson Kevin Osuri.

"The County Government of Kisumu and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board, Nyanza Branch have been proactively engaged on the implementation of the CBA with specific reference to the promotion of doctors. All the loose ends have been tied and an agreement reached," the notice read in part.

All doctors were advised to get back to work and "pick their letters of promotion from the county Department of Health on Monday 30th December 2019."

This would mean that the doctors would go into the new year - 2020 with their promotions.

"There shall be a joint press conference between CGK and KMPDU on Monday 30th December 2019 at 10 am at the County Headquarters to make public and put clarity to the agreements reached," the notice revealed.

The strike involved over 250 doctors in the county with Dr Osuri stated that the no doctor had been promoted in the past two years.
