A man and his son lost their lives in a grisly head-on collision with a lorry ferrying bananas near the Ngarariga Market along the Nanyuki-Nyeri Road on Monday, December 30, 2019.
In a report published by Citizen Digital, the two were travelling in small Suzuki vehicle on the fateful night on their way home before meeting their death.
Eyewitness statements indicated the truck was attempting to overtake when the driver made a grave miscalculation that resulted in it ramming into the oncoming vehicle.
Witnesses and residents rushed to the scene to assist the victims who were trapped in the wreckage.
The two were rushed to the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital where the nurse manager confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that the two were pronounced dead on arrival, however, the driver of the truck is yet to be accounted for.
Area residents appealed to Kenya Highways Authority to take quick action to erect speed bumps on the section of the road they described as a blackspot.
They have so far resorted to erecting make-shifts bumps in an attempt to reduce accidents.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) statistics as at December 19, indicated that a total of 3,409 road users have died since January 1, 2019.
This was reported to be an increase of 13 from the 3, 396 fatalities recorded by the agency two days before on December 17, 2019.
In December alone, 195 fatalities have been recorded.
However, this is a significant reduction from the 342 deaths recorded over the same period in 2018.
NTSA further indicated that pedestrians still continued to lead in fatalities with 1, 323 already losing their lives. They are followed by people travelling on motorcycles at 691 fatalities.
