Brenda Wairimu's Movie Earns International Recognition

A film in which Kenyan actress, Brenda Wairimu was featured earned international recognition after it was selected for play in Fly Emirates' award-winning inflight entertainment system, ICE, in January 2020.

Subira is an award-winning 2007 short film which was turned to a feature-length drama. It tells the story of a young girl from Lamu, who loves swimming and fishing with her father, but after he dies in a boating accident, she is conformed to her mother’s traditional upbringing.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on January 9, the film's director, Ravneet Sippy Chadha, expressed her joy after the film achieved the historic fete.

"It's amazing and we are so buoyed up by the plan. I am happy for everyone involved in the film and this will enhance Kenya's reputation globally," Sippy stated.

Apart from Wairimu, the movie also stars Tirath Padam, Nice Githinji and Melvin Alusa.

In October 2019, Kenya submitted Subira for consideration in the international feature category in the Oscars 2020. The country has submitted four films for Oscar consideration since 2012 but has yet to receive a nomination.

The 92nd Academy Awards are set to take place on February 9, 2020.

Subira is the second Kenyan film to be listed in Fly Emirates' award-winning inflight entertainment system, ICE. Supa Modo was the first in 2019.

A press release seen by Kenyans.co.ke indicated that passengers could choose from over 4,500 movie channels, programmes, music and podcasts.

Last year, Emirates elevated the inflight entertainment experience by introducing a playlist synching function on its Emirates App. This enables customers to browse the extensive content on offer, create personalised playlists ahead of their flight, and sync it to their seats once onboard their flight. In 2019, more than 180,000 unique playlists were created.

In 2019, ice won the third consecutive award for Best Entertainment at the 2020 Passenger Choice Awards held during the APEX EXPO in Los Angeles, USA. This winning streak has been due to its continual innovations in inflight entertainment, setting the benchmark for customer experience. The airline has been at the forefront of the industry from being the first airline to install TV screens in every seat in 1992.
