3 Buried Alive in Nyeri Quarry

One person has been confirmed dead while two others are still trapped after a quarry they were working in at Gikindu area of Nyeri County collapsed on them. 

Reports by KTN News indicated that the quarry caved in at around noon on Thursday, January 16, while the three were working at the site.

According to a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, an excavator was deployed to the scene to help in rescuing the trapped workers in a rescue mission coordinated by a multi-agency team.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga arrived at the scene of accident roughly an hour after the tragedy was reported.

Red-cross team is also arrived at the site and was trying to rescue the victims.

A multi-agency team also made its way to the site with caterpillars from the County Government of Nyeri aiding in the rescue mission.

The victims were reportedly buried about 30 meters into the ground when the quarry walls collapsed on them.

Separately, a family of three people was killed in Mwasere village in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, after a house they were in got buried by falling rocks after heavy rains.

The parents and their child were asleep on Thursday morning when the tragedy happened.

"We tried our best but unfortunately it was too late," Rong'e Kati Assistant Chief Kepha Mwasamba stated.
