Babu Owino Arrested Over Gun Drama

Update: 1.14 pm The Directorate of Criminal Investigations on Friday, January 17 confirmed recovering a gun that was suspected to have been used by Embakasi MP Babu Owino to shoot a DJ in a popular club in Kilimani, Nairobi.

In a tweet, the detectives indicated that nine rounds of ammunition were recovered with one cartridge that had already been used.

"Detectives have managed to recover the firearm that is suspected to have been used by Hon. Babu Owino at the B Club shooting incident. Nine rounds of ammunition and a spent cartridge have also been recovered and placed as exhibit awaiting analysis by ballistic experts," read the tweet.

Update: 12.25 pm. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed that Embakasi East MP Babu Owino would be charged with attempted murder.

In a police report seen by Daily Nation, the DCI stated that the MP would be taken to court after processing.

“We will charge him with attempted murder. It is apparent that he wanted to kill the man,” Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti remarked.

The report also stated that the MP drew his pistol and opened fire on the DJ, identified as Felix Orinda, after a heated exchange.

“He drew his pistol and shot the DJ in the neck. The victim was rushed to Nairobi Hospital in serious condition by the management of the club,” the report read in part.

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino was arrested on Friday, January 17 after he was allegedly involved in a shooting incident at a popular club in Nairobi.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, detectives pounced on the first time MP following a shooting incident at a popular club located along Galana Road within Kilimani.

"Detectives based at Kilimani have today arrested Hon Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino, Member of Parliament for Embakasi East following a shooting incident at B Club located along Galana Road within Kilimani.

"The MP is in lawful custody as further investigations continue," read a tweet by the DCI.

Sources confirmed that one person, a DJ, suffered gunshot wounds in the scuffle and is currently in the ICU of a Nairobi hospital.

The news spread like wildfire on social media, with Babu Owino trending at number one on Twitter. 

According to the DCI, the MP was taken to Kilimani Police Station as further investigations continue.

The parliamentarian was arrested as he rushed the injured victim to the hospital for treatment.

In January 2018, Babu was arrested after a CCTV footage video went viral where the legislator was seen assaulting a parking attendant at a building in Westlands.

It was alleged that Babu together with his bodyguard Fanuel Owino assaulted David Gichagu Wagana, a parking attendant after the MP failed to heed to instructions from the attendant.

His lawyers led by Siaya Senator James Orengo and Harun Ndubi questioned the motive behind the arrest of the Member of Parliament.

The lawyers claimed that the arrest was politically influenced by the Jubilee government.

The controversial student leader cum politician was released from police custody after Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja made an undertaking of Ksh.104,000 and a personal surety to produce him in court.

However, the victim withdrew the case against Babu in March 2018.
