Matiang'i's Ministry Issues New Warnings on VIP Security

The National Police Service (NPS) under the Ministry of Interior has issued out new warnings concerning the provision of security for VIPs in the country.

In a press release dated January 20, 2020, the NPS stated that it would withdraw the security detail of any VIP who was implicated in any crime in the country.

"To avoid compromising and demeaning the very essence of which the police are mandated, the National Police Service shall not provide security detail to VIPs who are involved in or suspected to be involved in crime until they are cleared by the courts," the release read.

Apart from having their security withdrawn, the NPS indicated that they would have their firearm licenses canceled and their weapons withdrawn.

The NPS insisted that it would provide security on the grounds that the VIPs benefitting from the privilege abide by the law as was required of them.

"The Inspector-General wishes to inform the public that the service continues to diligently provide close protection and VIP Security as a crucial part of its mandate. Accordingly, it is the expectation of the Service that the VIPs are accorded the privilege shall reciprocate by being law-abiding at all times."

"We wish to reiterate that the service remains committed to the safety and security of all citizens and residents of Kenya and encourages all persons to continue working with the police towards this end," the statement concluded.

The notice from the National Police Service comes barely a day after the Gatundu South legislator Moses Kuria cried foul that his security had been withdrawn hours before he made a big expose.

According to a report by Daily Nation, the legislator's security was recalled a few hours after he indicated that he was going to share information concerning the 2017 murder of IEBC ICT manager Chris Msando.

At the same time, the Embakasi East MP Babu Owino is battling accusations of attempted murder in court after allegedly firing at a DJ in a club in Nairobi leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

Owino is accused of shooting Felix Orinda, known to many as DJ Evolve, at B Club in Nairobi after a brief disagreement.
