Update: Mzee Moi passed away on Monday, February 4, 2020.
The family spokesperson of former President Daniel Moi has issued another update about his health condition in 2020.
Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, Moi's long-serving press secretary Lee Njiru noted that the president was still admitted at Nairobi Hospital and was receiving specialised treatment.
"He is okay, he is still in hospital and he is under the care of a professional medical team. As regards the specifics of his treatment, there is nothing much I can say because that is a medical field."
"I can only put out what I have been authorised to by his medical team. He is still there (at Nairobi Hospital)," stated Njiru.
News first broke in mid-October 2019 about his admission into the hospital for a routine medical check-up.
Moi was later discharged a few days later before being rushed back the Nairobi Hospital for the second time in two weeks, on Monday, October 28, 2019.
Njiru played down the fears at the time noting that it was a routine medical check-up.
"It is true that Mzee Moi went to Nairobi Hospital today (Monday, October 28, 2019) but it was a routine medical check-up.
"It is prudent and advisable that everybody should go for a medical check-up, so Mzee Moi went for a medical check-up," Njiru played coy at the time.
Towards the end of November, hopes were up that the former president, who clocked 95 years in 2019, would be discharged from the facility only for him to be moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It was speculated that he experienced breathing problems.
In mid-December, Baringo Senator Gideon Moi acknowledged that had been struggling with his health, but added that he was on the road to recovery.
“I wish to thank each one of you, on behalf of my family, for your prayers. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for praying and thinking of Mzee Moi at this time, as you all know he is not in the best of his health,” the senator stated.
The former President has spent more than two months at the facility where he is believed to be confined in his own VIP room.
The former head of state was spotted with public figures a few times in 2019 including with Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka (on April 25), former Prime Minister Raila Odinga (on May 5) and President Uhuru Kenyatta (on April 26). The leaders had gone to his Kabarak home to condole with him after the death of his son Jonathan Moi.
Uhuru later visited Moi at The Nairobi Hospital where the two held a lengthy discussion on November 15, 2019.
