President Uhuru Kenyatta’s nominee for Cabinet Secretary in charge of Health, Mutahi Kagwe, has long been known as a devoted public servant who served in the Kibaki government as Minister for ICT.
Unknown to many, Mutahi’s brother, Dan Kagwe, is also serving in government after appointment by the president in July 2016 as the Postmaster General and acting Chief Executive Officer at the Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK).
Dan, who is known for his reform-oriented style of leadership, has managed to bring major changes to Posta, as it is commonly referred to as.
Top on his major goals at PCK has been digitising the sector to keep up with the growing competition from other private companies which are using modern ways of conducting business.
In November 2019, Dan saw the corporation sign a deal with telecommunication companies that would help PCK users get parcels and letters delivered at their convenience through the use of digital mailboxes.
Through the digital system, subscribers register for the digital mailboxes and would use their mobile numbers as addresses.
The system also helps users get alerts on their mobile phones whenever they receive a parcel and pick it up at any Posta offices in the country.
On Monday, February 3, Dan noted that through the move and other rearrangements at the PCK, over 150,000 users had resumed use of Postal services.
“We identified the importance of technology by developing new-ground-breaking products that complement distribution solutions.
“We want to reinvent ourselves in everything that we do. It is the beginning of the future that we want,” remarked Dan Kagwe.
Before joining PCK, he worked extensively in the private sector; finance, courier and logistics industry and the wider East African region for over thirty years, holding senior-level capacities at FedEx, Henkel Kenya and Diners Club International.
Dan also serves as an associate member of the Kenya Institute Of Management and Marketing Society Of Kenya.
The postmaster general is a holder of a bachelor of arts in economics and business administration, along with a diploma in marketing.
On January 14, Mutahi Kagwe was nominated to the Cabinet when President Kenyatta restructured his Cabinet.
Mutahi will replace Sicily Kariuki who was moved to the Ministry of Water and Irrigation.
He also served as the senator of Nyeri County from 2013 to 2017.
