Kiambu Governor James Nyoro on Wednesday, February 19, nominated a new deputy governor, Joyce Wanjiku Ngugi.

Ngugi is the widow of former Gatundu South MP Joseph Ngugi.

Her name will be forwarded to the speaker of Kiambu County Assembly to be vetted by MCAs

In 2014, she sought to replace her late husband in Parliament but claimed to have been rigged out during The National Alliance (TNA) party primaries in favor of current MP Moses Kuria.

Despite announcing that she would contest on a United Republican Party (URP) ticket, Ngugi, however, dropped out of the race.

"The voice of my supporters says I should be on the ballot on August 7. I was rigged out in favour of Kuria but I will contest on a URP ticket," she told The Standard in July 2014.

Ngugi was also expected to run for the seat as an Independent Candidate in the 2017 General Election but pulled out of the race yet again, declaring support for President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Jubilee Party.

She denied claims that she had been bribed to stay out of the race to guarantee Kuria a clear path to victory.

"It was my choice to drop my bid as an independent candidate and join the Uhuru's campaign team.

"Being the president's home, I saw it wise to set aside my ambitions and mobilise people to vote on August 8," she told reporters in June 2017.

In May 2019, President Kenyatta appointed Ngugi to chair the National Council for Children Services.

Ngugi holds a Masters Degree in education from Kenyatta University in addition to a Bachelors degree, also in Education, from Egerton University.

The trained Counselling Psychologist also holds a diploma in drug addiction counseling from the Support for Addictions Prevention and Treatment in Africa (SAPTA) Center.
