The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Rally on Sunday, February 23, in Garrisa was marred with chaos after area residents came out in protest minutes before the rally began.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, irate residents are seen violently expressing their anger at the lack of government teachers in the region.

This is following a move by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to withdraw all non-resident teachers in the region following a spate of terror attacks.

ODM leader Raila Odinga informed the crowd that he had liaised with President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure that the shortage of teachers was addressed as soon as possible.

"I understand that there is nothing as bad as students going to class to find that there are no teachers. It is a very frustrating issue.

"We must bring the teachers here. I spoke to Uhuru before I came here, and I will talk to him once I go back. Starting next week, you will see some changes," he promised.

Raila further added that he would appeal to the TSC to lower the grades for students from the region with C- and D+ to join the Teachers Service Commission to ensure that the students would never lack teachers in the region.

His sentiments were echoed by Siaya Senator James Orengo who addressed the gathering after Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji.

"Odinga has said that teachers will return, but I am urging Senator Haji that on Tuesday, we must call the TSC to the Senate and the National Assembly to explain to us why teachers were withdrawn. The constitution is clear that every child in Kenya has a right to education," he stated.

The issue of the withdrawal of teacher in the region has been a thorny issue, leading to the leader of the majority in the national assembly Aden Duale threatening action on TSC over the action.

Further reports by the Daily Nation indicate that there was more chaos caused by a clash between the supporters of the current Garissa Governor Ali Korane and the former Governor Nadhif Jama following a heated 2017 election.
