Vocal Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro who has been a critic of the former premier Raila Odinga has now come out strongly to seek his support.

On Monday, February 24, he reached out to the AU special envoy to pull his allied MPs to support a bill which he sponsored in Parliament, which advocates for the protection of tea, coffee and dairy farmers.

During a fund's drive in Kiharu, Nyoro stated that he and other MPs have accepted the BBI. He added that it was not important to continue publicizing the report as most of the country's issues had been discussed at large.

"We have already accepted the BBI report as it is. We don't have to waste funds on something no one opposes, he spoke.

Nyoro however, didn't shy away from criticizing the BBI task force. "I think although I might be wrong, maybe the report that is being prepared is different from what we already know," he added.

Confused between calling the AU envoy "former premier" or "prime minister", he went ahead to seek the support of the ODM leader in passing his bill.

"Your Excellency Prime Minister, I have a bill in Parliament. I am asking you to whip all your MPs to support the bill. This bill will help all farmers from all corners of this country," he urged.

Nyoro and other legislators from Central Kenya are pushing for the drafting of a law that will see the introduction of the Guaranteed Minimum Returns (GMR) in the coffee, tea and dairy sectors.

“This bill will insure and cushion farmers from any adverse effects and be able to sustain and promote the growth of tea and coffee. The Ministry of Agriculture, through AFA, will provide and prescribe for the guaranteed minimum returns for the farmers of tea, coffee and any crop as may be scheduled under the scheme,” he reiterated.

The Guaranteed Minimum Returns (GMR) Bill is set to be tabled for discussion later this month.

"Agriculture is the backbone of Mt Kenya residents and if only the three key sectors, namely coffee, tea, and the dairy could be revived through the GMR, then we would have no problem with the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), which, to us, is not a priority," he explained.

It's not yet clear if the ODM leader will direct his troops to support this Guaranteed Minimum Returns (GMR) Bill.
