The Pharmacy and Poisons Board has issued an ultimatum to e-commerce sites that are trading in medical products illegally.
In a press statement shared on February 28, 2020, the Poisons Board stated that it was important for all members to be vigilant and only buy medical products from authorized dealers.
" The board is mandated to protect and promote the health of all Kenyans through regulating the profession of pharmacy" read part of the statement that was shared by the CEO, Dr. Siyoi.
The board stated that they were aware of the rise of e-commerce platforms that were illegally trading in medical products. This move is expected to weed out some of the frequently used e-commerce platforms in accessing medical products and prescriptions.
"It has come to our attention that some e-commerce platforms are trading in medical platforms including offering prescriptions which is a violation of the Pharmacy and Poison's Act (CAP 244, Law of Kenya)."
The poisons board is now directing all Kenyans to buy any medical products from accredited and verified premises.
The board also stated that it is working closely with the Communications Authority of Kenya to pull down all the concerned domain.
Necessary measures will be taken on any individuals, organizations or parties found to be part of this illegality.
"The board is working closely with the Communications Authority of Kenya to pull down such domains and arrest those found culpable."
The board insists that it is important to verify if any premises is registered. This can be done by sending an SMS to 21031.
Nonetheless, the statement had phone numbers that could be reached to report any such domains to the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
