The Directorate of Criminal Investigation, under George Kinoti, may be inching closer to cracking the murder puzzle of Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei after they retrieved the late's phone records which had been erased.
A report by People Daily on Friday, March 6, detailed that detectives retrieved all the data that may provide further clues into the investigations. According to the sleuths. Kenei's murderers liaised with a mobile service employee who deleted Kenei's records and deactivated his Twitter, Facebook and Whatsapp accounts.
His phone was found in factory settings mode with the SIM card missing.Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei, who worked at Deputy President William Ruto's Harambee House Annex office, was found dead on Thursday, February 20, 2020.
The information followed a comprehensive CCTV footage release by the detectives at their headquarters along Kiambu Road, Nairobi.
Through the footage, Kinoti linked Kenei to former CS Rashid Echesa's Ksh40 billion gun fraud case.
Throughout the visit, Kenei was seen receiving instructions from an unknown source.
"It is evident that throughout, he was receiving instructions or orders or directions from a certain source. It is manifest that the stakes must be so high and adverse that it could be dangerous to expose the source," Kinoti stated, after ruling out claims that Kenei committed suicide.
Questions being raised in connection with Kenei's data are; who did Kenei speak to on phone on the day he ushered Daniel Otieno Omondi, aka General Juma, the fake military general into Harambee House Annex and who flushed his phone.
The DCI further raised doubts on the letters addressed to his office and Police IG Hillary Mutyambai's office by the DP's officials, stating that they bore different letterheads.
As the details of Echesa's alleged gun fraud started unfolding, Ruto's office wrote the first letter to the DCI, detailing 10 aspects they wanted to be investigated.
The second letter was sent to the IG urging him to expedite investigations, arrest and arraign suspects in court.
Kinoti also used the CCTV footage to disapprove claims by Deputy President William Ruto alleging that Ex-Sports Rashid Echesa was at his office for 23 minutes.
The office of Deputy President William Ruto later issued a statement regarding the CCTV footage. In a statement signed by the deputy president's Chief of Staff, Ken Osinde, the DP refuted the narrative going around that former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa had stayed at his office for over an hour.
"According to the CCTV footage. Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa and his accomplices were inside the building from 9:38:29 to 10:02:37 -as confirmed by the CCTV aired at the DCI offices today.
"The rest of the time, the CCTV played at the DCI shows their movement outside the office," the statement reads in part.Deputy William Ruto pictured at the burial of Josephine Wambui Kimotho, mother to former Nakuru Mayor Samuel Mwangi in Lanet, Nakuru on February 26.DPPS
