The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has reined in on a notorious gang responsible for a series of violent robberies in Kuresoi, Nakuru County.
In a statement published on Twitter on Sunday, March 8, the DCI announced that it had managed to arrest nine suspects after a month-long operation.
"A team of DCI detectives drawn from SSU, CRIB and DCI Kuresoi yesterday completed a close to one-month forensic-led operation to wipe out a well-organised criminal gang that has been conducting a series of violent robberies within Kuresoi Sub-County," the statement reads in part.
The manhunt is reported to have been triggered by a robbery at Transnational Bank, Kiptagich Branch, on February 10, 2020.
The suspected robbers, having broken into the bank's strong room, are reported to have unsuccessfully tried to break a safe containing Ksh8.5 million.
The all-male suspects were using female aliases to throw off detectives.
After the failure, the DCI announced that the robbers then stormed into the adjacent shops and carted away electronic items.
The DCI also claimed that the suspects were behind incidences of break-ins and burglaries targeting shops selling electronics and petrol stations in the region.
Forensic analysis of mobile phones reportedly led to the arrest of the nine as they were traced to an electronics shop identified as 2C, which was robbed on December 17, 2019.
The nine suspects were identified as Robert Ng'eno aka Musuti, Matthew Kiprono aka Mosquito, Aron Cheruiyot aka Jose and Ronald Kiprono aka Lydia Chebet-, who is alleged to be the gang leader.
Also nabbed was Dismus Langat, Patrick Kipkori Cheruiyot, Anderson Kirui Kiprotich, Dennis Kirui, who went by the name Millicent and Walter Kipkorir who called himself Viola.
One suspect, however, identified as Kushoto is reported to have escaped the net and is still at large and his pursuit is in progress.
The DCI also announced that it had recovered several electronics at the scene including TVs and woofers.
The sleuths notified the public that most of the suspects were discovered to have pending robbery cases in court and with warrants of arrest for absconding the same cases.
