A man loves his sweetheart the most, his wife the best, but his mother the longest is an age-old saying that rings true to date.

This could explain the joy in Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala's face when he threw his 57-year-old mother -Martha Malala, a grand birthday party.

Taking to the podium, the Senator went on to pull the surprise of the day when he broke into song and dance, praising his mother alongside close friends and family.

"On this special day, I have decided to sing a song for my mum and let her know that we love her so much,

"I am a very gifted singer and I have a very special song I want to sing as we welcome my mum to the stage," he jokingly explained to rapturous applause from his relatives.

The Senator went all out during the party, with a multi-layered cake inscribed with his mum's name forming the centrepiece of the event.

Photos of the Senator and his siblings from their younger years were also incorporated into the colourful cake.

Malala's close relationship with his mother was clear for all to see during his arrest back in May 2019.

His mum never left Kisumu Central police station, where she pleaded with the officers to grant her son access to treatment for his diabetes as well as proper food.

The Senator was arrested in connection to incitement allegations and rising the rising insecurity that swept across Matungu area in 2019.

Despite his many political engagements, Malala still finds time to engage in his favourite pastime – writing and directing plays.

The vocal leader is passionate about promoting drama and nurturing talent in young actors.

His plays are usually about the people he meets and interacts with, their aspirations and pains.

“As a politician, I interact with many people. I hear their stories. I feel their pain and analyse their aspirations. These are the very stories that I write,” he once revealed to the Daily Nation.
