Members of the Kirinyaga County Assembly on Tuesday, March 11 hit Governor Anne Waiguru with a one-week ultimatum, vowing to impeach her if she failed to meet their demands.
The leaders held a press conference outside the assembly after a session where they tore into the governor over the controversy on a piece of land to be allocated to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the alleged poor handling of the bursaries fund.
Led by Majority Leader James Kamau Murango, they demanded that Waiguru release the deed for the 100-acre piece of land to facilitate the construction of a modern teaching, research and referral medical center.They further called for Ksh70 million approved by the county assembly for bursaries to be released by the end of the current financial year.
“We are giving Governor Waiguru one week to hand over the title deed unconditionally or else we will set off a motion to impeach her,” Murango declared.
Waiguru has been at the centre of the controversy surrounding the land as she demanded assurances on how the facility will benefit Kirinyaga residents, particularly in terms of jobs.
Among the Governor's requests were 30 percent of manual and non-technical jobs at the facility to be set aside for Kirinyaga residents.
Murango lamented that the project had been held up for too long due to the protracted negotiations between Waiguru and Kemri.
“We cannot allow this anymore and the Governor should better take this matter seriously; we are telling her to be careful otherwise before we are taken home by our constituents, she will go first.
“We want that tittle deed right here at the Assembly so that we can give it to KEMRI as soon as possible," he asserted.
Governor Waiguru's office was yet to respond to queries made by Kenyans.co.ke concerning the matter by the time of publication.
Mutithi ward MCA Baptista Kanga, in whose ward the Kemri facility is to be set up, accused Waiguru of failing to listen to residents of the county.
“This is a government which does not listen to its own people since everybody in Kirinyaga wants the project to take off,” he stated.
The Kemri facility was intended to serve residents of Central, Eastern and North Eastern regions by providing specialized treatment.
Once complete, it is supposed to contain a postgraduate University, Research centre, a modern hospital and state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratory.
