Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Thursday, March 11, welcomed his second grandchild.

Sonko visited his daughter Saumu Mbuvi at The Nairobi Hospital after she bore a baby girl on Sunday, March 8.

"As Lois Wyse once said, 'grandchildren are the dots that connect the lines from generation to generation. I have just visited my daughter who bore me a second grandchild, I couldn’t help but thank God for this great and humbling blessing.

"May God grant them both a long life filled with His favour and grace. I'm very very proud to become Babu Sonko," the governor wrote on his Facebook page.

Saumu, who is allegedly dating Lamu senator Anwar Loitiptip took to Instagram to announce she had delivered her baby on the morning of Sunday, March 8.

“Today morning we were blessed with a beautiful baby girl. And it still happens to be my first born’s birthday as well as Women’s day. I am more than grateful to God for all His blessings,” she wrote on Instagram.

The governor, who relinquished some of his duties to the national government on February 25, 2020,  has had some free time to spare for himself and his family.

In fact, on Tuesday, March 3, the governor stated that he was taking some time off to mark his 45th birthday in a classy party surrounded by close family and friends.

"I take this opportunity to ignore the current situation that I'm facing for a while and join my family to thank God for the love of life on this great day of my life," he posted on Facebook.

Sonko explained that it was important for people to take some time to celebrate the simple things such as the gift of life.

"Be proud of yourself no matter how bad the situation is. Just appreciate your family. As I thank God for another additional year on my life and as one of the youngest grandfathers," the Nairobi governor posted.

Sonko's daughter became the subject of debate after MCAs on Tuesday, March 10, claimed that she, alongside Nairobi County First Lady Primerose Mbuvi, used taxpayer money to fly to the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 2018).

"My attention has been drawn to unsubstantiated claims made yesterday by the Kitisuru Ward MCA, Hon. Alvin Palapala, that the Nairobi City County first lady and my daughter Saumu Mbuvi made an irregular trip to New York in March 2018 at the expense of the taxpayers.

"First, I wish to clarify that her inclusion, and that of my daughter, in the said trip were sanctioned by none other than the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua. As such, she was entitled to a fully-funded trip by the Nairobi City County government, like any other delegate, to attend the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW 2018)," the governor responded on Facebook.
