Two people were killed and one injured in Garissa on Sunday, March 15, after an ambulance ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
According to Regional Commissioner Nicodemus Ndalana, the emergency vehicle was in the process of rushing a patient to hospital when the tragedy struck.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Somalia Ahmed Awad, was quick to condemn the attack.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the People and Government of Kenya following the heinous IED attack that targeted an ambulance in Garissa County. This barbaric attack killed 3 innocent people including the patient and the ambulance driver. Terror and its evil must be defeated" reads an excerpt of a statement he sent out.
Reports revealed that the attack occurred in the Koran-Hindi, Galmagala area, a location notorious for similar attacks.
It is in this very area that 50 armed men emerged from bushes on either side of the roads and shot at the Kenyan soldiers back in 2015.
Hulugho has been susceptible to attacks by the outlawed Al Shabaab militia due to its proximity to the Kenya-Somali border.
On Friday, March 13, Six Al-Shabaab militants were killed in Jirole area, Garissa County following a security operation.
The Regional Commissioner announced that they had mounted operations in the area to counter any planned attacks in the area, disclosing that they had managed to capture one of the militants alive.
“The one who was captured is being interrogated as the operations go on,” he said.
The latest attack comes barely days since Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, announced that all security organs had been mobilised to secure the region from the deadly and destructive militia.
During a recent meeting attended by Garissa Governor Ali Korane his Mandera counterpart Ali Roba, the CS acknowledged that rampant terror activities in the area were interfering with development programmes.
