Suspected Coronavirus Patient Quarantined in Kericho

A 47-year-old man is quarantined in Kericho County as medical practitioners monitor him over suspected Coronavirus infection.

Daily Nation, on Tuesday, March 17, was first to report that the man was taken to Londiani Sub-county Hospital by his wife after he showed symptoms related to the disease.

The patient, who complained of severe coughs and weak joints, stated that he was a cleric who had toured Mombasa days before he started feeling ill.

"He was immediately quarantined in an isolated ward and his blood samples were taken to Nairobi for specialised analysis as first aid measures were put in place," a medical report quoted by the outlet read.

The case was reported on Saturday, March 7, at midnight but was brought to the attention of media on Monday as indicated in a police incident report.

Kericho Governor, Paul Chepkwony, confirmed the case while adding that his government was prepared to handle the outbreak.

"There are 117 isolation beds set aside and available in public and private hospitals across the county," Chepkwony stated.

The health workers directed his wife to self-quarantine at their family home in May Summit, around the borders of Nakuru and Kericho.

On Monday evening, March 16, Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna announced that the government was closely monitoring 17 possible cases of the Coronavirus disease (Covid-19)

Addressing the press at Teleposta Towers in Nairobi, Oguna urged the nation to remain calm as they carried out tests on the seventeen individuals.

"We are still awaiting results on the 17 suspected cases and we will be providing daily updates on the same. We are in the process of doing contact tracing of these new possible cases," he announced.

The Government of Kenya on Sunday, March 15, confirmed two more cases in Kenya, bringing the total number of Covid-19 cases in Kenya to three.

President Uhuru Kenyatta announced that of the 27 people who came into contact with the first confirmed patient, two had tested positive for the virus.

A 27-year-old lady who travelled to Nairobi from the US via London, the UK was confirmed as the first case on Friday, March 13, 2020.
