However, the telecom company informed that calls, SMS, MPesa, internet and data will remain available even during the time of maintenance.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience," the statement read in part.

On Monday, March 16, 2020, as a way to cushion Kenyans from the possible economic crisis brought about by the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Safaricom waived transaction fees for amounts below Ksh 1,000.

This was in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta's call to have charges reduced and encourage mobile money transfer a way to reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus through the physical exchange of cash.

The mobile service provider had announced that it would waive the fee for a period of 90 days.

Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph revealed that his firm worked with the national government to set up a call center and integrate the 719 toll-free line.

"We have also interconnected other networks to ensure that their subscribers can access the call centre. All calls to 719 are free," a statement from Joseph's office stated.

The company had also announced that it had received approval from the Central Bank of Kenya to increase the daily transaction limit from Ksh 70,000 to Ksh 150,000.

"Kenyans will also be able to transact up to Ksh 300,000 up from the limit of Ksh 140,000 and hold up to Ksh 300,000 in their Mpesa wallets," the statement read in part.

The resolutions cames after a closed-door meeting with CBK governor, Patrick Njoroge where the COVID-19 threat was discussed in length.
