Sauti Kuu Foundation CEO Dr Auma Obama left many Kenyans talking after sharing a video of herself dancing at home with her daughter on Tuesday, March 31.

Obama revealed that she wanted to brighten up people's days, away from the doom and gloom that has engulfed the world thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Clad in a pair of shorts, Auma and her daughter performed a routine in their living room set to Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido's hit single If.

She revealed that it was her daughter who pushed her to post something positive.

"With so much bleakness out there, thought I would share one of the positive moments despite Covid-19. Quality time with my offspring. Please share yours.

"She decided that we needed to post something positive and not just sad and angry," Auma wrote.

The video elicited hundreds of responses from Kenyans who praised her moves and thanked her for getting them smiling.

"Excellent attitude. We've lost a lot but at least we still have music," Knight-Bagehot Journalism Fellow Larry Madowo shared in response to the video.

"At least some dance to cheer us up. Tension here is real," wrote Wanja Douglas.

Auma shares a father with former US President Barack Obama and famously welcomed the former president during his more recent trips to the country in 2015 and 2018 when he launched the Sauti Kuu Foundation in K'ogelo, Siaya County where their father hails from.

A fearless defender of human rights, Auma has in recent days heavily criticised the brutality meted out on Kenyans by the police as a result of the nationwide curfew.

"This is our Covid-19 response in Kenya. Curfew from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Police brutality from 4 p.m. to ... whenever. I'm so mad!

"What kind of training do our police undergo to turn out like this? Kenyan lives matter!" Auma had written.

Even with her dance video going viral, Auma maintained that it was not all fun and games as she responded to reports of Kenyans having been killed as a result of police violence during the curfew, including a 13-year-old boy who was killed on his balcony by a bullet.

"Sorry guys. I can’t just do funny and fun. Too much evil is out there. We need to expose it!" she asserted on Wednesday, April 1.
