Boda Boda Rider Murdered by Colleagues for Breaking Govt's Directive

A boda boda operator in Manyatta, Kisumu was stabbed to death by his colleagues for allegedly carrying more than one passenger.

According to NTV, the incident is reported to have happened on Thursday, April 2, at around 7:45 pm in Manyatta Shule Junction area.

Members of a group claiming to be the security wing of boda boda operators in the area were conducting a crackdown on operators who had carried more than one passenger on their motorbikes. 

Fellow boda boda riders took matters into their own hands and descended on the operator who had more than one passenger on his pillion.

The two passengers also sustained injuries and were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and referral hospital. 

The crackdown is said to have started at around 6 pm with another rider also falling victim after being stabbed by the group.

The rider who was identified as Alex Osewe was taken to the mortuary by the police after they went to collect his body from the scene. 

The security arm of Kisumu’s boda boda operators is a notorious group which on May 4, 2019, bundled a rider out of his house in Mayatta stripped him naked, tied him up and tortured him to death.

Due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic in the country, Ministry of Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Monday, March 30 issued restrictions on boda boda operators. 

"The riders will be required to carry just one passenger, so they maintain some level of distance and wear protective masks to combat the spread of the virus.

"The boda boda rider and the passenger must also wear masks for protection. We shall be spreading out the masks in all counties shortly for use by the boda boda riders."

Coronavirus cases in the country have spiked over the last two days with the total number of those infected standing at 110 as of Thursday, April 2.

The highly infectious virus has so far claimed three people with the number estimated to hit 10,000 by the end of the month.
