A couple was not willing to shelve their wedding plans that had been in the pipeline for a year even as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread across the country.

According to a report by K24 TV,  George Lewis Kariuki, 30, and his lover Rachel Wanjugu Irungu, 26, tied the knot on Tuesday, April 7, in a ceremony attended by only nine people and lasted for 30 minutes. The couple was expecting 1,000 people.

Initially, the couple was aiming to hold a lavish wedding held at a luxurious venue and completed with good food estimated to set them back Ksh1.2 million.

To actualise their grand union, the couple started planning for the event in April 2019 and commenced making payouts to service providers to ensure the day turns out as planned.

The couple reportedly paid for Ksh300,000 for tents, emcee and gown among various other expenses in preparation for their big day that was slated to take place on April 25, 2020.

A few months to the day, however, the Coronavirus pandemic hit the country and the government was forced to ban public gatherings in an effort to curb its spread.

The couple, however, went ahead with their wedding plans and held a small affair at PCEA Muhito Church in Mukurwe area of Nyeri County.

The event was attended by the couple’s parents (four of them), the best man, the maid of honour, the officiating priest, Rev. Moses Muriu, and two bridesmaids.

When asked about the cost, the couple disclosed that the wedding was important to them after which they would attempt to pursue the companies for a refund.

“As of now, we are not sure. We wanted to wed first, and then follow up whether our money will be given back to us," they stated.

The state barred gatherings of more than 15 people forcing churches to hold their services online.
