Inspector General of police Hillary Mutyambai has stated that several buses and drivers have been punished after being caught sneaking out of Mombasa County.
In a video posted by the Daily Nation on Wednesday, April 15, Mutyambai stated that the buses had been caught outside Mombasa in contravention to the president's directive on the cessation of movement in the coastal region.
"We got some of the buses that had escaped from Mombasa county and had to escort them back here. On top of that, those buses' operation licenses and those of the drivers were cancelled.
"This is a very punitive measure that I do not want to encourage, but the members of the public should adhere to the directives issued by the government," the IG told members of the press in Mombasa.
Mutyambai further added that he was aware of scores of people who were trying to leave Mombasa using devious means to beat police officers manning several roadblocks in the region, a matter that he insisted would be dealt with decisively.
"I am giving very strict instructions to members of the National Police Service that they should not tolerate such people.
"When we get you, we will ensure that the process of prosecution is adhered to so that you may serve as a good example [to the rest]. I am upon calling the members of the public to cooperate with the police," he warned.
He further explained that the reason for his presence in the region was to join the police officers manning the roadblocks to help in streamlining some of the issues they may have experienced while enforcing the President's directive on movement.
"I decided to come to Coast to join the officers at the roadblock so that I would be able to guide where there is no uniformity.
"So during the day, I will be able to visit a number of the roadblocks, talk to the officers, get briefings in areas that are not clear after which I will be able to give guidance," Mutyambai stated.
Mutyambai also stated that he was planning to have a meeting with Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho to revisit various issues before officially visiting the roadblocks to ensure that the directives are enforced as they should be.
He clarified that the police were not enforcing the government directives alone but was in conjunction with other organs including officials from the Ministry of health to ensure full compliance.
