Kenyan Media Donate Ksh150 Million as Covid-19 Fund Crosses Billion Mark

Kenyan media houses have come together to donate a total of Ksh150 million to help in the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement signed by Citizen TV Media Owners Association (MOA) chairman, Wachira Waruru, on Tuesday, April 21, the association that comprises 15 media houses, agreed to donate Ksh10 million each in the form of advertisements to drive awareness campaigns.

"The Kenyan media has been at the forefront of reporting about the Covid-19 and driving public awareness aimed at curbing the spread of the pandemic.

"The MOA members who comprise of fifteen (15) media houses have agreed to donate advertising space and airtime to the value of Ksh10 million per media house. This will bring total contribution to Ksh150 million," reads the statement in part.

MOA members are Royal Media Services Limited, Standard Group PLC, Nation Media Group, Capital Group Limited, Ebru Africa Limited, Family Media Limited, Kass Media Group Limited, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, Media 7 Group, MediaMax Network Limited, Radio 44, Radio Africa Group, Switch TV, Three Stones Media Limited and TV 47.

Waruru noted that the total value of the contribution would be made on different media platforms.

“The advertisements will be carried across our newspaper, radio, TV and digital platforms,” stated Waruru.

The Royal Media Services MD further noted that the media houses would fulfill the pledge after reviewing their demands.

“The campaigns have mainly consisted of the content generated by individual media houses and public service announcements carried in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO), the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Communications Authority (CA),” Waruru is quoted by Citizen TV.

The emergency fund which was created by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday, April 1, hit Ksh1.2 Billion. 

A statement to newsrooms signed by the fund's chairperson, Jane Karuku, outlined that Ksh917 million was donated in cash while Ksh370 million was donated in kind.
