Senate Majority Leader Kipchumba Murkomen has criticised Health CS Mutahi Kagwe's approach in fighting Coronavirus.

According to a video that surfaced online on the evening of Wednesday, April 29, the outspoken lawmaker claimed that Kenyans were not satisfied with the CS's press briefings and that they needed more.

He further explained that a majority of people were expecting the CS to share realistic strategies on how the state was preparing to flatten the curve.

He also advised the state to involve the public, failure to which the people would always feel left out no matter what the country achieved.

"We praised our former colleague CS Mutahi Kagwe for the work he has been doing but Mr Speaker, I have seen that patience is running out from the people of Kenya.

"They want something more than an update. They want greater accountability. They want something more than an update on numbers. They want an update on what is being done to flatten the curve and cushion those suffering economically," stated Murkomen.

"I think it is important for us and the committees that work here to continue putting the information to the public. To make sure that the Executive is more accountable," he added.

The lawmaker was speaking during a Senate proceeding.

"The importance of public participation, Article 10 of our constitution says that you can do as many good things to the people but if they are not part of that doing, they may never feel that you are doing the right thing or you may end up doing the wrong thing.

"I urge the Executive to involve the public more on the process," he added.

This comes at a time Covid-19 cases are surging, having hit 384 with 15 people dead by April 29.

In his capacity, Kagwe has instituted a number of measures Kenyans should follow to avoid the spread, including social distancing as well as the use of facemasks.

The state also piloted a programme on which it will be sending vulnerable members of the society a weekly stipend to cushion them from adverse Covid-19 effects.
