Former Managing Commissioner at the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC), Ibrahim Isaak, has been ordered to refund the government Ksh11.5 million in a court case won by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
"Big win in court today as EACC recovers Ksh11.5M from Dr. Ibrahim Isaak, former Managing Commissioner at Kenya Meat Commission.
"The KMC boss fraudulently and in breach of public trust withdrew the said amount for personal use. The court ordered him to refund the money with interest," a statement from EACC on Wednesday, April 29 reads.
The judgment was delivered by Justice John Nyabuto Onyiego electronically as the court suspended open sessions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The decision was delivered seven years after Isaak was suspended in 2013 to allow for investigations into financial mismanagement in the company.
He was suspended after disclosure that the factory was heavily indebted and unable to pay its livestock suppliers.
In 2015, five senior employees appeared before court to answer to charges of defrauding the institution of more than Sh11 million.
The five included Isaak, Esther Ngari (Quality Assurance & Research Manager) Francis Mutuse (Accounts Assistant), Ruth Mwangi (Accountant) and Patrick Mutemi.
The government appointed Joseph Learamo as the managing commissioner for the state-run meat processor after Isaak's sacking.
In 2018, KMC fired 80 workers despite the government injecting Ksh650 million in October 2015 to revamp the meat processor that was sinking under crippling debt.
