A woman and a two-month-old baby were reportedly arrested on Wednesday, April 29, and hauled up at a pathetic quarantine centre at St Anne's Kisoki Girls in Busia County.
The arrest of the woman sparked outrage, as a viral photo shared on social media showed that the woman was forced to sleep on the floor, with her baby boy spending the night on a carton as cold ravaged them all night.
Speaking with Kenyans.co.ke on Friday, May 1, Caroline Akumu's husband, Ernest Osundwa lamented over how his wife was picked up by Busia County Government officers (askaris) as she was en route from her daily hustle.
"My wife was arrested at 5 p.m. (on Wednesday, April 29), as she was rushing to her place of work in the market, to ensure that her goods were secure. The county askaris arrested her and took her to Nambale and she was later detained at St Anne's Kisoko Girls High School.
"In the quarantine centre, she had nowhere to sleep and she opted to stay the night and let the boy sleep on carton board," he lamented.
He further revealed that his family was released on Thursday night, May 30 at 7 p.m.
"The government has not yet responded as to how the issue unfolded. I am so dissapointed with them," Osundwa cried out.
Busia County Commander John Wanyoike informed Kenyans.co.ke that the police were aware of the issue and he had ordered a probe into the matter.
"As per now, I cannot comment more on that. I got the report yesterday night (Thursday, April 30) and we have launched an investigation into it. We will release a conclusive report later," Wanyoike stated.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also launched a search for the woman and her family as he tried to ascertain the truth behind the viral photo.
The report comes at a time the Ministry of Health is under fire for alleged outrageous spending, as budget reports indicated that the docket, under CS Mutahi Kagwe, had misappropriated funds.
"There will be no theft of Covid-19 resources under my watch and if there is any truth regarding the misuse of Covid-19 funds, beyond being disheartened, I guarantee you that those responsible will be out of the ministry faster than we can blink," Kagwe defended and assured through a Facebook post on Thursday night, April 30.
