President Uhuru Kenyatta held a phone conversation with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on his success in fighting Covid-19 and also discussed an upcoming summit to be hosted in Kenya.

As of May 10, South Africa had the highest cases in the continent at nearly 10,000 with over 150 deaths and over 3,000 recoveries with commendable success in handling the virus that led to an easing of the lockdown.

Ramaphosa took to Twitter on Sunday, May 10, to reveal details of a phone call he had with Uhuru over the state of Covid-19 in South Africa.

"I had a good phone call the other evening with His Excellency President Kenyatta of the Republic of Kenya.

"The President has commended South Africa for our rigorous mass screening and testing programme as part of our fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I share President Kenyatta’s belief that Africa is uniting around a coordinated approach to curb the spread of the coronavirus," tweeted Ramaphosa.

The South African president who doubles up as Chairperson of the African Union (AU) also revealed details of a summit that is set to be hosted in Kenya.

"And I urge our sister countries to consider intensifying their testing programmes in line with the new realities brought on by this pandemic.

"As Chair of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP), Kenya intends to convene a mini-summit of ACP and has invited South Africa, in our capacity as AU Chair, to participate in the upcoming ACP Summit," wrote Ramaphosa.

Kenya hosted the 9th African, Caribbean and Pacific summit, titled "A Transformed ACP Committed to Multilateralism", in December 2019 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

In the summit, Heads of State and governments from at least 10 countries discussed ways of reducing, preventing and overcoming terrorism and insecurity to enhance development while also taking into consideration socioeconomic and cultural issues.
