A medical doctor died on Thursday, June 4, after allegedly throwing herself in front of a speeding lorry in Kajiado town, along Namanga Highway.
A report by K24 TV identified the victim as 57-year-old Eunice Kinuthia who until her tragic death was working at Kajiado County Referral Hospital.
The driver of the lorry identified as Dennis Owino told the broadcaster that he was driving along the highway when the woman threw herself before the moving lorry.
The driver further noted that he held the breaks and the woman attempted to support herself on the lorry's side mirror.
“When I spotted her, I slammed the brakes on. She held on to one of the side mirrors. The braking impact, given the vehicle was in high speed, threw her off, causing her instant death,” stated the driver.
Other witnesses at the scene painted an image of a disturbed woman who seemed to be in deep thought since she arrived at the roadside in the morning.
The body of the deceased was transferred to Kajiado County Referral Hospital.
The incident comes at a time medical personnel across the country are under pressure dealing with the fast-spreading Covid-19 virus, a communicable disease.
In early May, a combination of Nurses, clinical officers, pharmaceutical technicians and other cadres of the health workforce issued a strike notice that threatened to paralyse medical activities.
The health workers were demanding improved working conditions with a special focus on safety.
They also decried neglect claiming that they had put their lives on the line to take care of the victims of the pandemic but the state had neglected them.
On May 18, the group, however, agreed to postpone the strike by 21 days after reaching an agreement with the state.
