NTV journalists were on Friday, June 5, chased away from a burial that was taking place in Mukurweni, Nyeri County, with over 300 attendees including senior government officials.

The journalist's Joseph Kanyi, Melita Ole Tenges and Charles Muriithi were roughed up by rowdy youth for filming the occurrences of the funeral.

The youth further demanded the journalists to delete all recordings and photos they had taken of the burial.

It is alleged that Acting Health Director-General Dr Patrick Amoth was also in attendance. He is believed to have been representing Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, who was supposed to be in attendance.

Other leaders who were in attendance include; Mukurweini MP Anthony Kiai and Nyeri County Assembly Speaker John Kaguchia.

When asked why some individuals were being allowed to attend such social gatherings and yet there was no action taken against them, Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi stated that the government was not able to police all 47 million Kenyans.

"In past press briefings, the CS has called on Kenyans including leaders and political classes to adhere to these measures and I think in the coming days as well.

"We shall re-emphasize and remind people what our guidelines state and why those guidelines are there. It is you and I that are going to ensure these guidelines are observed," she stated.

Mwangangi added that security personnel needed to attend more important matters, hence, Kenyans should take personal responsibility to avoid contracting.

In March, all  National Government Administrative Officers were directed to ensure that no weddings, merry-go-rounds, birthday parties or funerals took place in measures aimed to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

“I want to be brutally honest that cultural practices on how we dispose of the body of our loved ones may not be practical during these times,” Mutahi warned.
