The Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) on June 16, emerged victorious in the just concluded 2020 edition of the ICC Moot Court Competition at the Hague, Netherlands.
The varsity beat out other African Universities to win the Regional Memorial for Africa in the competition that was held virtually due to restrictions arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 2020 edition saw 71 universities from 50 countries compete.
The team comprising of Wangui Njoroge, Julius Miiri Wamboi and Brenda Hope N. Waweru emerged the Best in Africa region.
The institution took to social media to expressed its delight in the achievement by the law faculty.
"We won - Regional Memorial for Africa - 2020 edition of the ICC Moot Court Competition. 71 teams, 50 countries! No mean achievement. Congratulations to our Faculty of Law participating team - Wangui Njoroge, Julius Miiri Wamboi and Brenda Hope N. Waweru," read a post by CUEA on June 16.
Also participating in the competition from Kenya was Kenyatta University which was represented by Gibson Gisore, John Ng’ethe Jessica Anieke and Maeve Adhiambo.
The ICC Moot Court Competition brings together universities from all over the world for a large scale moot court simulating the proceedings of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong SAR) & Leiden University (The Netherlands) won the award for the best Defense Counsel Memorial while the Best Prosecution Memorial went to University of Tartu (Estonia)
Temple University (United States of America) bagged the Best Government Counsel Memorial and the IBA Best Memorial Award
The Competition consists of an extensive six-day educational and social program, which brings together students of diverse backgrounds and cultures to The Hague to challenge their skills as future international lawyers.
The final round usually takes place in an actual ICC courtroom with ICC judges adjudicating.
The Competition was founded in 2004 at Pace Law School (White Plains, NY). Based upon the success of what was originally created as an in-class exercise by Prof. Matthew Brotmann and Prof. Gayl Westerman, the moot was expanded to an invited list of schools in 2005.
The following year the ICC Moot was opened up to law schools from around the world.
