On Monday, June 21, Kenya's Coronavirus cases rose to 4,797 with 59 individuals testing positive from 2,354 samples tested in the last24 hours.

During the daily Covid-19 briefing at Afya House, Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi announced that 73 patients were discharged after recovering from the virus.

All the 59 new cases were identified as Kenyan nationals with the youngest being 7 years old and oldest is 66 years

"Unfortunately, we have lost 2 other patients, bringing the total deaths to 125," she announced.

The latest figures bring the total number of samples tested in the country so far to 142,366.

CAS Mwangangi detailed the regional distribution of the cases as follows: Nairobi 28, Mombasa 21,  Kilifi 3, Kiambu 2, Machakos 2, with Kisumu, Bungoma & Uasin Gishu recording 1 case each.

Despite the huge drop from the astronomical figure of 260 positive cases announced by Health CS Mutahi Kagwe just 24 hours earlier, CAS Mwangangi was quick to caution Kenyans against assuming that the rate of spread of the coronavirus was declining.

"We are working on a revamped communication strategy to remind Kenyans that the fight is still ongoing. Community transmission continues to be a challenge in the country and just because you are seeing 59 cases today does not mean that the scourge is going down," she asserted.

Addressing the issue of the 550 Covid-19 positive patients that were released into the newly launched home-based care system, the CAS urged the public to play their part in combating the virus by helping to ease the burden currently being experienced at healthy facilities across the country..

"We are aware that some counties are experiencing an upsurge of asymptomatic patients. The success of the home-based care system will require the participation of each one of us.

“The Ministry of Health (MoH) has adopted an enhanced approach which is centred on communities and the roles they can play in helping to mitigate Covid-19. We have partnered with community healthcare workers and so far 12 million households have been reached " she explained.
