A man was captured by a CCTV camera stealing Ksh120,000 from an M-Pesa shop in Nyamache, Kisii County with residents raising concerns about the growing number of robberies in the area.

Traders in the town reported that a gang of robbers has been terrorising them for weeks, breaking shops and making away with huge amounts of money and valuables.

In the video, the man is seen inspecting the shop that was left unattended and walked in posing as a customer before sneaking in.

The agent noted that he had met the man before he proceeded to steal from the shop with the attendants at neighbouring shops not knowing the shop was left unattended.

"As I was crossing the road he entered the shop, the person at the adjacent shop thought I was still in there, he didn't see me leave," he noted.

A resident revealed that the suspect was well known in the area due to scars on his face.

"He is somebody who is known because the camera well captured him, he has marks which are easily identifiable, he has a cut on his nose and a mark on his forehead," noted the resident.

Since March, there has been a rise in reported cases of break-ins after the nationwide curfew was put in place.

The loss of jobs during the pandemic has also been identified as a contributing factor to pushing some into stealing due to loss of income and the high cost of living.

Police in Nyamache have launched investigations into the increased cases of insecurity and manhunt for the man captured by CCTV.

A businesswoman in the area noted that the incident was the fourth since the start of the month and feared for the safety of shop owners.

Residents of the area have been asked to provide tips and leads to police as they continue with their investigations.
