Nation Media Group Sports Journalist Jeff Kinyanjui launched a funding campaign for Nzoia Sugar striker Jeremiah Wanjala who was diagnosed with cancer.

The funds raised are aimed at buying a motorbike for the striker to help him cater for his weekly chemotherapy expenses.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kinyanjui revealed that he was inspired to start the funding after Nairobi City Stars defender Wesley Onguso received backlash for his Boda Boda side hustle.

"I was inspired to start the campaign after Onguso's story was blown out on social media for the wrong reasons but in truth doing a Boda Boda business can earn you more money than being a footballer.

"On the same front, I wanted to start a fund to help a struggling footballer and settled on Wanjala because his case was unique as he has cancer and was struggling with finances," explained Kinyanjui.

The striker was diagnosed with the disease back in February before the pandemic brought a halt to all sporting activities in the country.

Wanjala spends close to Ksh. 25,000 a week on chemotherapy and has appealed for donations on a number of occasions.

Kinyajui hopes that the motorbike will help Wanjala get some constant income to cater for his medical bills especially now that teams are not in action due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Wanjala's team Nzoia Sugar has also been struggling financially due to the parent company operating losses, a situation that has led the players to miss payments on occasions.

He was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer after complaining of stomachache and had visited a number of health facilities before the disease was detected.

He made the move to Nzoia Sugar in the January transfer window from fellow Kenyan Premier League Kakamega Homeboyz.

The striker was crowned the SJAK player of the month award in September 2017 following a run of two goals and two assists in the month.
