Leaked documents of the mileage allowances being earned by Members of Parliament set social media ablaze on Tuesday, July 28 with some reacting to it.
The documents were first posted by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria on Monday, July 27 but he later deleted the post.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Moses Kuria claimed that the documents were legitimate and explained his reason for deleting the post.
"The figures are correct, if they were wrong you would have seen my name on the list. I deleted the post because they were victimizing the parliamentary staff.
"But that is not the issue, the main reason I posted the documents was because I do not like to be seen fighting for allowances, I should be discussing Kenyans problems and not about allowances," noted Moses Kuria.
The MP also highlighted unfairness in the mileage allowances, with some legislators getting a tens of millions in allowances.
Nominated MP David Ole Sankok noted that he had not done an annual calculation on the mileage allowance which he received (Ksh 2,404,656) but according to his estimation they were accurate.
"The amount translates to about Ksh 40,000 in a week, which I think is justified because MPs buy their own cars, we do not have government cars.
"When you have your own car you are paid as per the rate of Automobile Association of Kenya (AA) per kilometer in terms of how much fuel you will use, wear and tear and the cubic centimetres (CC) of the vehicle," noted Sankok.
When contacted, National Assembly Clerk Michael Sialai, however, claimed that the documents were fake.
"They are not legit, they are fake, some members have also asked me about it but I have not seen it, inquire from Moses Kuria where he got them from," he stated.
Bomet Woman Representative Joyce Korir was one of the biggest beneficiaries according to the document as she reportedly received Ksh 43,600,866 in both 2018 and 2019.
