A member of the National Assembly, on Wednesday, July 29, lead protests against a Chinese company whose explosives had destroyed a school among other properties.

A report by People Daily indicated that residents of Mai Mahiu were fed up with the operations of China Wu Yi, a company which they accused of destroying the topography of the area.

The firm is involved with the mining of construction materials from one of the quarries in Naivasha County.

Led by local MP Jayne Kihara, the residents were seeking to have the company cease operations in the area.

She claimed that the explosives had destroyed locals' houses, livestock and a school valued at Ksh6 million, that was constructed by the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) and was now on the verge of collapse .

Residents in the area were also looking to have the quarry closed and China Wu Yi's license revoked after spotting cracks on the school's administration block.

Kihara visited the area and after observing the environmental degradation, she promised to forward the matter to the National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) and the County Government.

“The blasts from the quarry have left a trail of destruction by demolishing homes and affecting Gathima Primary School and it is time this was stopped,” she stated.

She termed the explosives that were used by the quarry as too strong as they were affecting the environment.

National Environmental Complaint Committee, in March 2019, suspended activities of the Chinese firm at the quarry after complaints emerged that its operations were affecting the neighbourhood.

Both Nema and the Nakuru County Government had issued the company with an order stopping it from running its activities at the quarry.

The suspension, however, only lasted 14 days.
