A Mt. Kenya Region politician has spoken with Kenyans.co.ke on reports stating that he contracted Covid-19 a few days after meeting Deputy President William Ruto at his Karen, Nairobi residence on Monday, July 20.

On Thursday, August 6, Muteti Murimi, a Kirinyaga politician and 2022 parliamentary aspirant acknowledged that indeed he had contracted the virus a few days after the meeting, maintaining that he wasn't ill when he met Ruto.

Muteti met Ruto alongside a section of young entrepreneurs from the Mt. Kenya Region. The group held a consultative meeting with Ruto and later on posed for a photo session. The politician responded after a section of Kenyans on Facebook launched attacks on him with accusations of flouting (Coronavirus) Covid-19 rules when meeting Ruto.

"I tested positive two weeks ago but I have already recovered and I am now negative. I was on self isolation and was treated from home. I was well when I went to Karen that Monday (July 20), so the issue of the DP should not arise here.

"All measures were observed during our meeting with him. Why would the DP isolate yet I was not sick when I visited his residence?" Muteti stated.

According to the response he gave to Kenyans.co.ke, Muteti stated that he suspected to have contracted the virus while attending another meeting later that week.

The politician stated that he started experiencing some chest complications and went to hospital and results turned positive.

"Covid is real but not a death sentence and so we must stop politicising the issue and focus on creating awareness," he urged.

Images shared from the meeting showed some of the attendees not wearing masks while social-distancing was not maintained during the photo session.

The Ministry of Health categorised Covid-19 patients to two, asymptomatic and symptomatic. Asymptomatic patients do not show signs and symptoms of the virus as opposed to symptomatic ones, but both can spread the disease.

To curb the spread of Covid-19, President Uhuru Kenyatta extended the ban on political gatherings and also shut down bars for 30 days while addressing the nation on Monday, July 27.

As of Wednesday, August 5, Kenya had recorded 23,873 positive Covid-19 cases, 391 fatalities and 9,930 recoveries.
