DCI Shoot Remandee After 10 Escape From Bungoma Police Station

UPDATE Monday, August 17: A section of Bungoma residents staged protests outside the Bungoma Police Station demanding justice for the late Michael Gacheche who was murdered in June.

Two of the 10 remandees who escaped from the police station on Sunday are suspects in the murder case of the businessman.

The case was set to be mentioned on Monday, August 17 with the hearing scheduled for Wednesday, August 26.


A remandee was shot by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers on Sunday, August 16, after 10 escaped from the Bungoma Police Station.

The incident occurred at around 3 a.m. as was reported by officers Joshua Wanga and Nickson Libole who were stationed at the station.

The two police officers were alerted by the prisoners that some of the remandees had escaped from one of the cells after digging out a hole in one of the walls.

After a headcount in the police station by the two officers, it was discovered that eleven prisoners had escaped through the same hole.

The ten had previously been charged with robbery with violence, burglary, assault, theft, defilement and impersonation.

The escapees managed the daring escape after cutting an angle line metal bar that reinforced the cell door and used the same to dig the hole.

A search team comprised of officers from the station and DCI sighted the escapees running towards a bush in a nearby airstrip.

Isaac Wekesa, one of the escapees was shot on his left thigh and was successfully recaptured by the team of officers.

Wekesa was later taken to Bungoma Referral Hospital where he was admitted with reports indicating that he was in a stable condition.

Police are in pursuit of the 10 escapees who are still at large.

In a separate incident, six remandees escaped from Karuri Police Station cell in Kiambu on Wednesday, July 29, through a toilet window.
