Manhunt Launched for Dangerous Suspect Who Escaped Jail at Night

Police in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County launched a manhunt for a dangerous suspect who escaped police custody on Tuesday night, July 21.

Humphrey Shilisia, a robbery and rape suspect linked to various crimes in Eldoret broke out of prison mysteriously, with police also investigating how he managed to secure his freedom from Langas Police Station Cells.

The suspect was arrested on Friday, July 24, and was detained by police to aid them in conducting further investigations.

A police officer was also arrested and detained for questioning. His bosses stated that he was on duty on the said night and could not explain how Shilisia escaped under his watch.

Kapseret Sub-County Police Commander Francis Warui confirmed the incident stating that detectives were sent to trace the suspect on the run.

"The police arrested him last week and sought more time to conclude investigations. 

"The police officer assigned to guard him on the night he escaped will face disciplinary action and will be prosecuted," he proclaimed. 

Warui reassured residents that the suspect will be rearrested as detectives were following crucial leads that will detail his movement and whereabouts.

Eldoret residents staged demonstrations to protest the prison break arguing that their lives and those of victims and witnesses are in danger.

They also urged the police to expedite the prosecution of the police in custody.
