Police launched a manhunt for six suspects who escaped from Karuri Police Station cell in Kiambu on Wednesday, July 29.

The six included five remandees and a convict who successfully pulled out the escape from the police cell after cutting part of the window.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Kiambu county commander Ali Nuno confirmed that the six suspects escaped through a toilet window.

"The incident occurred last night after midnight, one convict and six remandees escaped, I've left the scene and the OCPD is there with investigations going on.

"The matter is subject to investigations, it is being alleged that they escaped through the window in a toilet, only six prisoners can be in a toilet in a given time," noted Nuno.

Their escape, however, was not smooth sailing as Corporal Boniface Simiyu and Boniface Mwanzia who were on duty were alerted by noise from one of the cells.

Seeking to investigate the cause of the commotion, the two corporal found the metal bars in one of the ventilation window cut and left of the floor.

After conducting a headcount it was established that out of the 26 prisoners who were in custody, six of them were missing.

A search for the six suspects was launched by the Sub County Police Commander alongside other officers to apprehend them.

Prison breaks have been on the rise since the enforcement of the 9pm to 4 am curfew with a British Woman identified as Joanne Goodman, escaping from the Mtwapa Remand Prison on July 24.
