Ambassador Judy Wakhungu's mother, Grace Wakhungu, can have a temporary sigh of relief after she was allowed to seek treatment.

On Monday, August 17, Wakhungu was allowed to see a personal doctor over her illness while serving her term at the Lang'ata Women's Prison.

She was sentenced to 69 years in prison with an alternative fine of Ksh707 million after she was accused of colluding with Sirisia MP John Waluke to defraud the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Ksh297 million in 2009.

Towards the end of July, Wakhungu claimed that her health had continued to deteroriate arguing that she needed urgent medical care.

“My client’s plea is that she be heard early next week if the court can’t hear the matter today because of her state of health. She requests to be examined by a government doctor in presence of her own doctor,” argued lawyer Paul Muite on her behalf.

Muite further stated that the current Covid-19 pandemic placed his client at a high risk of exposure while in prison.

Her plea was, however, initially denied with the judge ruling that it could be heard on Friday, August 7.

Wakhungu is still serving her term despite claims that her family had raised Ksh800 million within one month to secure her release.

The duo was denied bail and bond with principal prosecution counsel Ruby Okoth arguing that they had not raised any serious grounds to warrant their release.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, DPP Noordin Haji stated that he would object any appeals to lessen the sentencing of the duo after they appealed the case.

"The court has already denied them bail. The only thing remaining is the reduction of sentence and we shall oppose that," stated Haji.

While sentencing the two on June 25, Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Juma said the offences they committed were serious, adding that the two and their company took advantage of a dire situation in the country, as Kenya faced a drought, to defraud the National Cereals and Produce Board.
