Digital Shift

Reuters detailed that it had ascertained that a number of newsreaders were shifting towards digital news and the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic was very likely to accelerate long-term structural changes towards a more digital, more mobile, and more platform-dominated media environment.

In its survey, smartphones and computers dominated as devices used to access news at 83% and 55%, with tablets accounting for 11% of news readers.

The report added that social media accounted for 90% of new sources.

The study also showed that Kenya beat South Africa, the second-biggest economy in Africa as of 2018, in internet reach with 87% of its population able to access the internet against South Africa's 55%.

South Africa has a population of 59 million while according to the 2019 Population and Housing Census, Kenya had a population of 47.5 million.

It was also revealed that 90% of the Kenyan population consumed its news through online sources with 77% getting it exclusively from social media. Print media sources trailed with 47% with TV standing at 74%.

Brand Trust

The Reuters report also ascertained that Kenya had relatively high levels of trust and value in the media.

"Half say that they trust most news most of the time," the survey detailed.
