Shabana FC is in mourning following the death of Evans Omoke who passed away on Monday, August 17 following a stomach injury he sustained during a match.
Omoke suffered the unfortunate injury on Friday, August 14 during a training match against local side Town Warriors at Gesure Primary School grounds in Nyamira.
A statement from Shabana FC on Monday confirmed the death of Evans who once turned out for Posta Rangers in the Kenyan Premier League.
"We as Shabana family are saddened to announce the death of one of our players Evans Obutu who plays in the defensive position.
"The late Obutu succumbed today evening after an operation. The remains of late Obutu are preserved at Nyangena Hospital Mortuary," read the statement.
The referee was forced to abandon the match when Evans picked up the serious injury five minutes to the half time break.
He lost considerable time after being rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) and was not attended to due to the ongoing health workers strike.
The defender was forced to seek alternatives at Nyangena hospital where he was treated and discharged from the hospital the same day.
Omoke however developed complications on Sunday and was checked into Nyangema where he was booked for surgery but passed away immediately after the operation.
Tributes from players and fans trickled in as he was described as a player who had discipline and was committed to the team.
"We have played with him for a long time from Division One until we got promoted to the NSL, he had a lot of discipline, we hoped that we would earn promotion to the KPL next season," noted one of the players.
