Joseph 'Jowie' Irungu on Thursday, August 20, spoke for the first time in media since he was released on bond from Kamiti prison.
Speaking during an interview, Jowie confessed that being imprisoned had affected him mentally which was still impacting his quality of life.
"Whenever I see walls, I see my two by three cube. There is nothing good about being incarcerated. Jail drains you, it doesn't rehabilitate. It is up to you to change," he stated.
Jowie who had been imprisoned for one year in connection to the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani, stated that after he was released on bail back in March, he had made it a habit to spend the better part of the day outside.
"Walls terrify me a lot. They take me back to being in a cell. I like to sit outside a lot because that is where I can breathe fresh air," he explained.
Promoting his new gospel single Nishikilie, Jowie stated that since his incarceration, he had learned who he needed in his life, noting that his friends abandoned him in his time of need.
"All my friends let me down, only family stayed with me. I do not have to pretend anymore. I don't need friends anymore. Family accepts you as you are," he stated.
He added that he didn't have much finances since he's release from prison noting that he was content with the little he had.
"Now, I am focussed on taking care of myself and my daughter. I do not have much but thankfully, we are able to get a meal," he explained.
The gosepl singer stated that he was saved and had quit drinking as he embraced his new chapter in life.
Jowie was released from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison on Wednesday, March 11 after posting his bond.
He was arrested on September 25, 2018, and charged with murder following the gruesome death of 28-year-old Monica Kimani in her Kilimani apartment.
Former Citizen TV presenter Jacque Maribe, was also arrested four days later as it emerged that she had spent some time with Jowie on the night of the fateful murder.
Maribe was, however, released on a Ksh2 million bond on October 30, 2018.
