Police lobbed tear gas and dispersed a group of Kenyans who were holding peaceful demonstrations against the government on Friday, August 21.
The group was protesting against the loss of Covid-19 funds which has put the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) and Health docket under CS Mutahi Kagwe on the spotlight.
Some of the activists were arrested and bundled into a waiting police van in the Nairobi Central Business Station.
"I am not a thief. You are arresting the wrong people. Kenya is not a police state.
"Arrest the right people. Comrades power!" the activists lamented while being apprehended outside the Nairobi Archives.
The activists had earlier on marched through Uhuru Park while carrying placards calling for the resignation of officials embroiled in the scandal.
They bumped into GSU police at the park, who had been waiting for the protests to commence.
On Thursday, August 20, communications consultant Wanjeri Nderu explained that the protests had been organised by the Kenya Tuitakayo Movement (KTM) in partnership with Facebook group Buyer Be-ware team.
On Thursday, August 20, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Global Fund threatened to withdraw over Ksh 400 billion offered to Kenya as aid, after an investigative report revealed that cartels at Afya House were embezzling funds set out to tackle the Covid-19 crisis.
KEMSA CEO Jonah Manjari was suspended, pending an investigation into the matter as Health CS Mutahi Kagwe defended his docket against the allegations.
Kagwe, however, acknowledged that cartels at Afya House were obstructing transfers and other efforts to curb corruption at the docket.
