A suspect in the murder of Kilimani businessman Kevin Omwenga has confirmed that the shooting did take place albeit accidentally.
In a statement he recorded to the police on Sunday, August 23, the suspect, Robert Bodo Ouko, confirmed that the gun went off while the two were scuffling over the gun.
Ouko, who works as businessman Chris Obure's personal bodyguard, disclosed that he took the gun from his boss' office at Senteu Plaza next to Galana suits where the shooting occurred.
He reportedly took the gun on Friday, August 21 at 6:00 a.m. and returned it a few minutes before midnight.
He further disclosed that he handed the gun to Omwenga that evening as they left a joint along Argwings Kodhek Road for Ngara where they picked a female companion.
He is said to have explained that the businessman took hold of the gun to show off and when he wanted to leave, he is said to have pulled Omwenga to the bedroom to take back the gun.
There is reported to have been a party at the house's sitting room on the fateful day.
The scuffle that ensued between the two as Ouko attempted to get the pistol back saw the gun go off and pierce through the left of his (Omwenga's) heart.
Chris Obure was also thrust onto the spotlight when he had to explain how his gun was found at the scene of the crime.
The businessman had also been declared an unfit gun holder after he got accused of assaulting another person in the past and caused him bodily harm. His bodyguard was also not approved to own a firearm.
The detectives are also looking to interrogate his family to ascertain whether his sudden change of lifestyle might have led to his untimely death.
A report by Citizen TV indicated that the businessman, in March, had grown bankrupt to a point he was unable to pay his rent after quitting his job as an operations manager at a car dealership.
He bounced back quickly and was able to buy high end cars in roughly two months.
Bodo and Obure are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, August 24, 2020.
