The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has alerted motorists to brace for traffic disruption as two major Nairobi roads face partial closure for an unspecified period of time.

KeNHA stated that traffic on Mombasa Road and Uhuru Highway would be interrupted due to the construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

The notice was signed by the authority's Director General Peter Mundinia and issued on Thursday, September 3.

"The construction works will be limited to the central median of Mombasa Road. However, in some instances, we may be required to close a single lane on either side of the highway to ensure the safety of motorists plying the route," KeNHA alerted.

The notice added that the contractor would minimize the disruption of traffic during the execution of the project between JKIA Turnoff - Cabanas, NextGen Mall- Capital Centre and Kenyatta Avenue - University Way Roundabout.

Motorists were requested to follow directions as shall be indicated on the road signages provided, and or by traffic marshalls.

The project valued at Ksh 62 billion is one of the main projects under President Uhuru Kenyatta's Big 4 Agenda.

The road will start at Mlolongo and will pass outside Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) through Nairobi Central Business District to join Waiyaki Way in Westlands.

Over 25,000 motorists expected to use the road daily will part with a Ksh 300 toll fee on each day.

Payments will be done at exit points of the major roads where both manual and electronic toll stations will be erected.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that may be caused as we endeavour to improve the existing infrastructure along this critical section of the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway," KeNHA apologised.
